Monastery Facts

The Benedictines came to Minnesota in 1856 from St. Vincent Abbey, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and, earlier, to Latrobe in 1846 from the Bavarian abbey of Metten in southeastern
Germany. Saint John’s is a member of the American-Cassinese Congregation that includes twenty Benedictine communities for men in North America and abroad.

Br. Paul Richards OSB of Saint John’s Abbey founded the Benedictine Volunteer Corps in 2003. This year (2010-2011) is the third year that the SJBVC has had a volunteer in Collegeville.

Work of the SJBVC

Volunteers in Collegeville live in the monastery alongside the other monks in formation. This year’s volunteer is primarily working at Saint John’s Preparatory school.
